National Maritime Heritage Complex
A major project being developed at Lothal to present India's maritime heritage through museums, galleries, research and heritage tourism.
Overview
The National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal is intended as a national destination for maritime history: a campus combining museum galleries, interpretive experiences, facilities for research and education, and amenities for visitors.
The project is under development. Facilities, phasing and public access arrangements should be confirmed with the official project authorities rather than assumed from any secondary description, including this page.
Why Lothal?
Few places in India carry so direct an association with early seafaring. Lothal's dockyard basin, its warehouse platform and its position near the Gulf of Khambhat place the maritime story at the very beginning of the subcontinent's urban history.
Setting a maritime heritage complex beside the excavated site allows the ancient evidence and its interpretation to be experienced within one landscape.

The intention behind the complex is to connect the archaeology of Lothal with the longer story of Indian seafaring, and to make that story available to students, researchers and general visitors alike.
As a heritage destination it is also expected to support the wider region, from visitor infrastructure to the interpretation of surrounding villages and craft traditions.
